At this time, you cannot fly a drone on the Carbondale campus. The primary reasons for this restriction. Is that the entire campus (and most of the City of Carbondale) can be considered to be within the controlled airspace of the Southern Illinois Airport and the heliport at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. FAA regulations prohibit drone flights in restricted airspace without first obtaining the appropriate waivers from the FAA.
The entire Carbondale campus is located within restricted airspace. Further, the University has determined that, in order to protect persons and property and the privacy of individuals, it is necessary that drone use on campus be generally prohibited, and subject to an approval process. The approval process is designed to facilitate University-related drone use for research and teaching purposes. If you were to fly your personal drone on campus, you would be violating FAA regulations and you would assume the responsibility for any liability resulting from the use of the drone.
